How does a TACAN work?
TACAN receives an interrogation code from an aircraft, delays it and retransmits the same code back to the aircraft. The time, measured in microseconds, it takes for the code to reach the aircraft determines the distance from the ground station. Approximately 100 aircraft can interrogate the TACAN at any given moment.
What is a TACAN approach?
A tactical air navigation system, commonly referred to by the acronym TACAN, is a navigation system used by military aircraft. It provides the user with bearing and distance (slant-range or hypotenuse) to a ground or ship-borne station.
Why does the military use TACAN?
Tactical Air Navigation (TACAN) was developed to provide precise geographical navigation for military use. Like a VOR, provides 360 radials coming from the station. VOR and TACAN systems collocated are called VORTACs. An additional advantage is that TACAN ground equipment is compact and relatively easy to transport.
What is the difference between VOR and TACAN?
VOR stands for VHF Omnidirectional Range. It is a navigation beacon intended for civil use and provides a user with a radial to/from the station. It works on frequencies between 108.00 and 117.95 MHz. TACAN stands for TACtical Air Navigation, a military system that is similar to VOR but with higher accuracy.
Can you hold over a TACAN?

Can we use TACAN?
You can buy and legally use TACAN equipment for GA aircraft from Bendix/King, but the system is expensive (close to US$100,000), relatively heavy and requires rack-mounting.

How does the base antenna of a TACAN work?

As already mentioned the base antenna is vertical and common the distance and bearing measurement instruments. Parasitic elements in the aerial field refer to passive antenna elements added to the actual active radiator.

How does the TACAN transponder work as a DME?
The TACAN transponder performs the function of a DME without the need for a separate co-located DME. Because the rotation of the antenna creates a large portion of the azimuth (bearing) signal, if the antenna fails, the azimuth component is no longer available and the TACAN downgrades to a DME only mode.
