How do modern jet engines start?
The electric motor spins the main shaft until there is enough air blowing through the compressor and the combustion chamber to light the engine. Fuel starts flowing and an igniter similar to a spark plug ignites the fuel.
Do jet engines have starter motors?
Variations and older aircraft As an alternative to the APU, some jet aircraft use a Jet Fuel Starter (JFS), or even direct battery power to initially spin the blades. The JFS is, like the APU, a separate turbine that generates compressor bleed air to start the main engine, directly connected to the engine.
Do jet engines require electricity?
Traditional jet engines create thrust by mixing compressed air with fuel and igniting it. The burning mixture expands rapidly and is blasted out of the back of the engine, pushing it forwards. Instead of fuel, plasma jet engines use electricity to generate electromagnetic fields.
Do turbojets have spark plugs?
A jet fuel igniter resembles a spark plug in a car. When provided with a high voltage a spark arcs across an air gap in the combustion chamber. The spark is provided by an exciter.
Do airplanes have ignition keys?
Small planes (like the little Cessna in How Airplanes Work) have locks on the doors and ignition keys inside to start the engine. Commercial jets, on the other hand, have no locks on the doors and no ignition key of any sort. You can hop in, flip a couple of switches and start one up!
Why do jet planes leave white trails?
Jets leave white trails, or contrails, in their wakes for the same reason you can sometimes see your breath. The hot, humid exhaust from jet engines mixes with the atmosphere, which at high altitude is of much lower vapor pressure and temperature than the exhaust gas.
Why shouldn’t keys be left in the ignition when the plane is parked?
The reason why they need locks and keys is because they sit out in relatively unsecure parking areas, sometimes for weeks at a time. They need locks for the same reason that a car does when it is sitting in a parking lot. Commercial jets, on the other hand, have no locks on the doors and no ignition key of any sort.
When do the igniters come on in a jet engine?
Continuous ignition is when the igniter is turned on, which provides continuous sparks to ensure the engine doesn’t flame out. So when are the igniters turned on? Here are 7 times… As described above, the igniters come on during engine start to light the initial fuel air mixture.
Why do modern jet engines need spark plugs?
I’ve read that modern aircraft don’t need spark plugs like conventional aircraft do, as the jet fuel autoignites once it’s mixed with the hot air exiting from the compressors. Then why do aircraft like the Airbus A320 still have 2 igniters in the combustion chamber, to ignite the air fuel mixture?
When to use continuous ignition in an engine?
The fuel to air mixture needs to remain within close parameters for a self-sustaining flame. Continuous ignition is when the igniter is turned on, which provides continuous sparks to ensure the engine doesn’t flame out. So when are the igniters turned on?
How does a jet engine keep burning fuel?
It stays lit by continually burning fuel. The jet engine works the same way. Once the fire is lit (by the ignitors) it is constantly burning. Air is constantly being supplied by the compressor and fuel is constantly being supplied by pumps.
