Regardless of their location, airports around the world tend to be designed in a distinctly similar way. We spoke to Tuomas Silvennoinen, the chief architect responsible for the design of Helsinki Airport’s new terminal expansion, and asked him for his thoughts on international airport design.

Why are there different codes for different airports?
Two official entities assign distinct codes to every airport. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), an arm of the United Nations that ensures aviation regulations jive across different countries and continents, assigns codes generally used by air traffic control and by airlines in crafting their flight plans.
When do they call an airport an international airport?
They call an airport “International” if it is capable of having international flights arriving and departing from it. Even if it currently does not have such flights, it could potentially have them or had them once upon a time. The latter is especially true with smaller airports.
What are the four classes of airports in the US?
Under this changed certification process, airports are reclassified into four new classes, based on the type of air carrier operations served: Class I, II, and IV airports are those that currently hold Part 139 Airport Operating Certificates (AOCs). Class III are those airports that will be newly certificated.
What are new requirements for Class II airports?
Under the revised Part 139, Class II airports are required to comply with more operational and safety requirements than were required of Limited AOC holders. These new requirements are in addition to modifications made to the airport certification process and other administrative changes.
