What is the purpose of contra-rotating propellers?
Use of contra-rotating propellers recovers energy lost due to the motion of the air in the slipstream of the forward propeller and allows for an increase in power without a corresponding increase in propeller diameter. It will also help counter the torque effects of a high power piston engine.
What is contra-rotating turbine?
The contra-rotating turbine under consideration is an axial flow stage comprising two wheels rotating at the same speed and equal torque but in opposite direc tions (Fig. 1). Under these conditions, the swirl entering the first wheel has to be equal to the swirl leaving the second wheel.
Why do propellers have 2 blades?
A: To handle the power supplied to the propeller from the engine. For small engines with relatively small horsepower, only two blades are necessary (i.e. small airplanes, and most airplanes through the middle 1930s, with engine power less than 500 horsepower).
Do Jets have counter rotating engines?
Engines on airliners turn the same direction. The torque isn’t as much an issue on jets as it is on props. A lot of multiengine prop planes have propellers that turn in opposite directions. In turbine engines this can be done in a gearbox to allow the same engine to be used on both sides.
How do counter rotating fans work?
The general idea of a counter-rotating system is that two rotors (front and rear) are rotating in opposite directions. The energy in the tangential velocity component of the flow after the first rotor is usually wasted in the wake (Dron, 2008).
What are the advantages and disadvantages of contra rotating propellers?
Advantages and disadvantages. The torque on the aircraft from a pair of contra-rotating propellers effectively cancels out. Contra-rotating propellers have been found to be between 6% and 16% more efficient than normal propellers.
Why are there no contra rotating jet engines?
Such a jet engine would have contra-rotating turbines, or contra-rotating compressors, or both. In fact I cannot think of even one aircraft that has this. If some prop-engines have contra-rotators, I don’t see why some jets don’t have it either. It seems to me the contra-rotating parts would be more efficient in extracting power or compressing air.
Why did the Shackleton use a contra rotating propeller?
In the Spitfire/Seafire and Shackleton’s case the primary reason for using contra-rotating propellers was to increase the propeller blade-area, and hence absorb greater engine power, within a propeller diameter limited by the height of the aircraft’s undercarriage.
How is a contra rotating turbine turbine designed?
The contra-rotating turbine is designed by retaining the existing flow path and HP turbine, and redesigning the LP turbine for fixed radial distributions of inlet total temperature, pressure and swirl. A comparative study between performance of the co-rotating and contra-rotating turbines is carried out for different speeds.
