Can contrails form at low altitude?
Contrails produced from jet engine exhaust are seen at high altitude, directly behind each engine. By contrast, the visible cores of wingtip vortices are usually seen only at low altitude where the aircraft is travelling slowly after takeoff or before landing, and where the ambient humidity is higher.
When did contrails start?
Contrails were initially discovered during the first high-altitude flights in the 1920s, although scientists and engineers were not overly concerned with them until WWII, when military bombers could be seen from miles away due to the long lines of contrails left in their wake.
What are the two types of contrails?
Contrails are “condensation trails,” and they have nothing to do with chemicals. They occur when water condenses into a cloud – in either liquid or ice-crystal form. Contrails come in two varieties: aerodynamic and exhaust contrails.
What is that trail behind airplanes?
Jets leave white trails, or contrails, in their wakes for the same reason you can sometimes see your breath. The hot, humid exhaust from jet engines mixes with the atmosphere, which at high altitude is of much lower vapor pressure and temperature than the exhaust gas.

Why do airplanes leave a trail behind them?
The trails left behind by planes are officially called contrails, short for concentration trails. In short, contrails are formed when the water vapor in the exhaust from the plane’s engines condenses into water droplets, which then freeze into ice particles composing a line-shaped cloud.
