How does AES key expansion work?
The AES key expansion algorithm takes as input a four-word (16-byte) key and produces a linear array of 44 words (176 bytes). This is sufficient to provide a four-word round key for the initial AddRoundKey stage and each of the 10 rounds of the cipher. The key is copied into the first four words of the expanded key.
What happens in the rotate phase of the Rijndael key schedule?
The rotate operation takes a 32-bit word like this (in hexadecimal): 1d2c3a4f. And rotates it eight bits to the left such that the high eight bits “wrap around” and become the low eight bits of the result.
How many words is AES-192 key expansion?
The key schedule N as the length of the key in 32-bit words: 4 words for AES-128, 6 words for AES-192, and 8 words for AES-256.
How many words is AES 128 key expansion?
Assuming a 128-bit key, the key is also arranged in the form of an array of 4 × 4 bytes. As with the input block, the first word from the key fills the first column of the array, and so on. The four column words of the key array are expanded into a schedule of 44 words.

Why AES is an iterative cipher?
AES is an iterative rather than Feistel cipher. It is based on ‘substitution–permutation network’. AES uses 10 rounds for 128-bit keys, 12 rounds for 192-bit keys and 14 rounds for 256-bit keys. Each of these rounds uses a different 128-bit round key, which is calculated from the original AES key.
What is the difference between AES 128 and 256?
The difference lies in the length of the key. As the longest, the 256-bit key provides the strongest level of encryption. The three AES varieties are also distinguished by the number of rounds of encryption. AES 128 uses 10 rounds, AES 192 uses 12 rounds, and AES 256 uses 14 rounds.
How do I get a 128-bit AES key?
Characters are represented with 8 bits. hence to form 128 bit key, create a string having 16 chars (16*8=128), e.g. “abcdefgh12345678”. I put that all in a shared class with static fields and methods, so i can use it everywhere in my app. I use it to store SessionID i shared preferences, and it works nice.
What are the key Expansion Recipes in Rijndael?
The key expansion recipes for 128-bit, 192-bit, and 256-bit keys are subtly different from each other. The key expansions all utilize a few operation in Rijndael’s Galois field. The operations are: A rcon operation that is simply 2 exponentiated in the Galois field.
How is the Rijndael ( AES ) key expansion performed?
This article explains how the Rijndael (AES) key expansion is performed. In order to make this document simple to understand, only the AES key and block sizes will be examined. The key expansion recipes for 128-bit, 192-bit, and 256-bit keys are subtly different from each other.
How many bits are needed for a Rijndael key?
For Rijndael, the block length and the key length can be independently specified to any multiple of 32 bits, with a minimum of 128 bits, and a maximum of 256 bits. The support for block and key lengths 160 and 224 bits was introduced in reference [2]. AES fixes the block length to 128 bits, and supports key lengths of 128, 192 or 256 bits only.
What is the rcon operation of Rijndael?
A rcon operation that is simply 2 exponentiated in the Galois field. The S-box operation is described on this page . The inner loop of the key schedule for all of AES’ (and Rijndael’s) key sizes is as follows: The input is a 32-bit word and an iteration number i. The output is a 32-bit word.
