Are jet engines and turbine engines the same?
All jet engines, which are also called gas turbines, work on the same principle. The engine sucks air in at the front with a fan. As the jets of gas shoot backward, the engine and the aircraft are thrust forward. As the hot air is going to the nozzle, it passes through another group of blades called the turbine.
What makes an electric motor such a good source of propulsion?
Electric propulsion has a number of advantages over propulsion that depends on fossil fuel. Among those is the very quiet operation of such engines. This is compounded using large-diameter, low-RPM propellers that also generate relatively low noise.
Can you have an electric jet engine?
You can’t have an electric jet plane. A jet plane would have a turbine engine and the whole principle of the turbine engine include a combustion chamber which mean that jet fuel is used in order to create combustion.
How are electric jet engines similar to jet engines?
Traditional jet engines power 95% of commercial aircraft and we have based our design on the same principles, yet far simpler. Our electric jet engines rely on just a single “stage” rotor/stator system driven by an electric motor with zero emissions.
Why are electric motors better than combustion engines?
The performance of electric motors and power electronics has vastly improved: today, they achieve a better degree of power density than that of combustion engines. In addition to their light weight, electric motors have a greater range of speed than combustion engines, which reduces the need for gearboxes.
Is it possible to make an electric airplane engine?
Simply assume that providing the electric motor with enough power is not an issue and that the weight of the battery is equal to fuel. Is it possible to build an electric aircraft engine that would allow current commercial airplanes the same capabilities as jet engines available today do? Not yet.
How is a turbine engine different from a turbojet engine?
The combustion process, as with piston engines, adds energy to the system, and in turbine engines powers the turbine itself. In turbojet and turbofan engines, the turbine is sized to drive the compressor section and fan as appropriate.
