What does the EGT gauge indicate and how is it controlled?
In a piston engine, EGT is a measurement of the temperature of the exhaust gases at the exhaust manifold. As the temperature of the exhaust gas varies with the ratio of fuel to air entering the cylinders, it can be used as a basis for regulating the fuel/air mixture entering the engine.
What does EGT gauge tell you?
An exhaust gas temperature gauge (EGT gauge or EGT sensor) is a meter used to monitor the exhaust gas temperature of an internal combustion engine in conjunction with a thermocouple-type pyrometer. By monitoring EGT, the driver or pilot can get an idea of the vehicle’s air-fuel ratio (AFR).
How does an EGT gauge work?
An analog EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) probe is essentially a temperature detector that that works without electricity because it relies on thermocouplers. If heat is applied to the junction, the metal expands generating a tiny electrical pulse called ‘Seebeck voltage’.

What is a normal EGT reading?
The temperature of the turbine, (turbo) blades probably never reached above 1000 degrees. A good safe target is to set your edge, or if you have regular gauges, your foot, at a cutoff temperature of 1250. Then you are never going to get your temps above an “sustained” unsafe limit.
How hot should EGT be?
The absolute maximum safe EGT range is debatable. Our universal rule of thumb, regardless of engine make/model/year, is to not exceed 1250° F and not to operate in the 1200° F – 1250° F range for an extended period of time.
