When would you use a genlock?
Genlock was used to keep cameras, and other video sources’ frames in sync to avoid nasty artifacts introduced when switching from one source to another. These days most switchers can compensate for this rather than feeding black burst to every source from a central clock.
Is Genlock still needed?
In the HD world genlock is still with us, but using a composite signal as a reference has largely been supplanted by tri-level, which emits pulses that clock both the frame rate and the line rate. Because it synchronizes frames, genlock can be used to keep multiple devices from drifting apart.
What is genlock video?

Are there any cameras that can be synchronized?
The cameras the department owns are Canon DSLRs, however after much searching it seems infeasible to synchronize them, especially with this level of accuracy. Therefore if I can find affordable cameras that can be synchronized easily, we might be able to buy some. The two options available to me seem to be genlock and LANC.
