Can you straighten a bent shaft?
A bent shaft can occur as a result of damage during shipment, rigging, or operation. Shaft straightening methods, when properly applied, can sometimes be used to salvage damaged shafting. Because of the different variables involved, shaft bend correction can be as much an art as a science.

What is bent shaft?
A rotor is considered bent when it loses its symmetry with respect to its rotating axis. The bent can have its origin in thermal growth or radial and axial overload. A bent shaft manifests in the spectrum at the shaft rotating frequency. A phase shift of 180°, indicates that the shaft is bent.
What are the symptoms of a bent crankshaft?
Abnormally rigorous vibrations and grinding noise are signs of a bent or broken crankshaft. Look out for excessive vibrations when using your mower that was not there before. Symptom 2 are issues with the transmission. A bent or broken crankshaft can hit other parts causing problems in the transmission system.

Flame straightening is an efficient and long- established method of correcting the distorted parts. Flame straightening is based on the physical principle that metals expand when heated and contract when cooled. In practice, an oxy-acetylene flame is used to rapidly heat a well- defined section of the workpiece.
How do you straighten a bent bar?
A press, log splitter, and/or groove in a stump all could work to straighten a bar. Putting the bar in a groove in a stump/tree and stand on it. Remember that the bar was probably bent by one guy leaning on it, or possibly a tree going over on it. Go slow, find the bend, and get it done.
How bad is a bent prop shaft?
If your skeg is bent and there are vibrations, it can end up damaging most things around it—the gears, the bearings, and even the shaft. The prop shaft is slightly being pulled off at the spot where it comes out of the holder.
