What does the AREF pin do?
AREF means Analog REFerence. It allows us to feed the Arduino a reference voltage from an external power supply in order to configure the reference voltage used for analog input (i.e. the value used as the top of the input range).
What is Aref in atmega?
The Aref pin is used for an external voltage reference. If you attach it to 5V then you can’t attach it to an external reference voltage. With it disconnected you can program the pin to internally connect to 5V. The capacitor is just for decoupling and noise reduction when using it as a real voltage reference pin.
Which circuits is used with Aref pin when we provide external power supply?
analogReference() Arduino AVR Boards (Uno, Mega, Leonardo, etc.) EXTERNAL: the voltage applied to the AREF pin (0 to 5V only) is used as the reference.
What is analog reference voltage?
It is the reference voltage against which all other analog voltages (analog inputs) are measured against. By default it is the same as the chip supply voltage (5V on most Arduino boards), so the analog inputs can measure between 0 and 5V.
How many digital pins are there on the UNO board?
14 digital
Arduino/Genuino Uno is a microcontroller board based on the ATmega328P (datasheet). It has 14 digital input/output pins (of which 6 can be used as PWM outputs), 6 analog inputs, a 16 MHz quartz crystal, a USB connection, a power jack, an ICSP header and a reset button.
Can Arduino Uno measure voltage?
The Arduino Uno is also capable of using an external voltage reference, which is connected to the AREF pin. This reference voltage cannot exceed 5-volts. In order to use the external reference in your code, you need to specify it using the analogReference command.
What is meant by reference voltage?
A voltage reference is an electronic component or circuit that produces a constant DC (direct-current) output voltage regardless of variations in external conditions such as temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, current demand, or the passage of time.
What is Arduino UNO rev3?
Arduino Uno is a microcontroller board based on the ATmega328P (datasheet). It has 14 digital input/output pins (of which 6 can be used as PWM outputs), 6 analog inputs, a 16 MHz ceramic resonator (CSTCE16M0V53-R0), a USB connection, a power jack, an ICSP header and a reset button.
Why Arduino UNO is used?
The Arduino UNO board is primarily used over other Arduino products because of the following reasons. As the board can be easily connected to the other computer system via USB port. It can be used to supply the power supply to the board and can act as a serial device to connect the board to a computer system.
What is the maximum output voltage of I O pins for Uno Nano?
Arduino Uno Technical Specifications

|---|---|
| Input Voltage Limits | 6-20V |
| Analog Input Pins | 6 (A0 – A5) |
| Digital I/O Pins | 14 (Out of which 6 provide PWM output) |

Is there a AREF pin on the ATmega?
The short answer is that it depends on the particular AVR model. Mega88 family, for example: has a dedicated AREF (pin 20 above in this package) with no options to use as I/O. Tiny88 in the same package has no provisions for an external AREF signal: Your model, as you alluded to, is in between an has the option:
Can a AREF pin be connected to an external voltage?
The internal voltage reference options may not be used if an external reference voltage is being applied to the AREF pin. From the Arduino reference pages: Alternatively, you can connect the external reference voltage to the AREF pin through a 5K resistor, allowing you to switch between external and internal reference voltages.
Can a external reference voltage be used on an ATmega328?
From the ATMega328 datasheet, section 24.9.1: The internal voltage reference options may not be used if an external reference voltage is being applied to the AREF pin. From the Arduino reference pages:
When to switch from Aref to internal AVCC?
The application would benefit from the increased resolution of switching to 1.8V AREF when sampling the 1.8V sensors and switching to the internal AVCC reference for the 5V sensors.
