How does a TRIAC fan regulator work?
This type of voltage regulator is an energy saving device which uses TRIAC, DIAC and potentiometric resistance. This method provides the step less control of the fan speed by deriving the required amount of power from the main supply at a given instant. Hence, the power is conserved rather than wasted unnecessarily.
How a DIAC is used as a triggering device for TRIAC?
The main application of a DIAC is its use in a TRIAC triggering circuit. The DIAC is connected to the gate terminal of the TRIAC. When the voltage across the gate decreases below a predetermined value, the gate voltage will be zero and hence the TRIAC will be turned off.
What is a DIAC and TRIAC?
DIAC stands for Diode AC switch. TRIAC stands for Triode AC switch. DIAC is a bidirectional device that lets current pass through it in both directions when the voltage across the terminals reaches break-over voltage.
What is the purpose of DIAC in power control circuits?
Diacs are primarily used as trigger devices in phase-triggering and variable power control applications because a diac helps provide a sharper and more instant trigger pulse (as opposed to a steadily rising ramp voltage) which is used to turn “ON” the main switching device.
What is the principle of DIAC?
The DIAC is basically a diode that conducts after a ‘break-over’ voltage, selected VBO, and is exceeded. When the diode surpasses the break-over voltage, then it goes into the negative dynamic resistance of the region. This causes a reduction in the voltage drop across the diode with rising voltage.
How does a fan speed control switch work?
Fan speed is reduced by placing a capacitor in series with the switched live feed to the fan reduce power. The capacitor acts as a dropper. Speed depends on the value of the capacitor in circuit. The speed control switch selects a different capacitor to give different speeds.
How do you control a Triac?
In other words, a Triac can be triggered into conduction by both positive and negative voltages applied to its Anode and with both positive and negative trigger pulses applied to its Gate terminal making it a two-quadrant switching Gate controlled device.
What are the different uses of diac and TRIAC?
DIAC is used to build different circuits like lamp dimmer, heat control, the universal motor speed control circuit & starter circuits used in fluorescent lamps. TRIAC is used in the control circuits such as motor control, fan speed controlling, light dimmers, switching of high-power lamps, controlling of AC power in domestic applications.
How does a simple fan regulator work with TRIAC?
Connect the load or ceiling fan between the Phase or Line terminal of the AC power supply and MT2 terminal of TRIAC. NOTE: For demonstration purpose, we have connected a light bulb to the simple fan regulator circuit along with a multimeter to show the voltage.
How is a diac triggered in an AC circuit?
The AC mains waveform is effectively delayed or phase shifted by the RC circuit so that the diac is triggered by a discharge of current from the capacitor C1 into the triac gate. The triac then conducts for the remainder of the mains half cycle, and when the mains voltage passes through zero it turns off.
How is DIAC used in the quadrac thyristor?
Quadrac is a special type of Thyristor which uses DIAC and TRIAC in a single package. In this device, DIAC is used to internally trigger the TRIAC. Quadrac has a wide range of applications like switching, temperature modulation control, Speed control or various dimmer related applications.
