Why have a resistor across relay coil?
In a relay, the resistor absorbs access voltage given off when the relay is activated. This will protect any other components in the circuit from voltage spikes. While the relay is ideal for full voltage applications, the built-in resistor will protect any sensitive equipment against voltage spikes.
Does a relay coil have resistance?
Like for automotive applications, the relay coil resistance is mostly in the 50 ohms – 200 ohms. For 24V systems, the coil resistance can be as high as 200 ohms to 600 ohms.

How to control current through a relay coil?
You are using DC coil relays with a 5 volt rating and the coil resistance is 69Ω so the coil current is 69 / 5 = .072 amp. Your source voltage is 13.8 volts. So we have 13.8 – 5.0 = 8.8 volts and that gets us to 8.8 volts / .072 amp = 122Ω.

Why does a contactor have a coil with a core?
All electro mechanical relays and contactors have a coil with a core. They are electromagnets. Energizing the coil causes a magnetic field to form which, in turn, operates a movable armature of some kind. The armature opens and closes depending on the influence of the magnet field generated by the current flowing in the coil.
