How do you compensate a scope probe?
To compensate for these nonlinearities, HF probes tend to shunt the input of a scope with a very small capacitor and a series resistor right at the BNC. This serves to move any nonlinearity into a higher frequency region, outside the intended range of the probe, without causing severe overshoot.
Can you measure capacitance with an oscilloscope?
An oscilloscope can be used to measure a time constant as a means of finding the actual capacitance of a device or the amount of distributed capacitance in an electronic system. A digital storage oscilloscope can readily display voltage plotted against time in a capacitor charging or discharging through a resistor.
How do you use a oscilloscope probe?
Step 1: Plug the probe into Channel 1 of your oscilloscope. Step 2: Attach the probe tip to the signal you want to test. Step 3: Attach the ground tip to a known ground.
What is the capacitive load of an oscilloscope probe?
Direct connection of the oscilloscope to a circuit by means of a coaxial cable or X1 probe will add an additional capacitive load, due to the cable, of approximately 50 pF per meter. The combination of the input and cable capacitance is approximately 65 pF. The oscilloscope input impedance is represented in the probe schematic by R2 and C2.
Where is the adjustable capacitor on an oscilloscope?
Oscilloscope probe circuit The adjustable capacitor may be located in the connector area of the probe, i.e. where it is connected to the scope. Often, though it is located in the tip where the capacitor in the tip is the one that is adjusted. It typically does not matter which one is adjusted.
How is the impedance of an oscilloscope measured?
The oscilloscope input impedance is represented in the probe schematic by R2 and C2. Both the oscilloscope and cable capacitances are represented by C2. The high impedance probe isolates the measured circuit by adding a large resistor, R1 in this example, in series with the oscilloscope input.
How does coax affect the probe tip capacitance?
Thus the coax and C2 compensation with scope input C combined is about 9x the C1 value. The scope probes use special high impedance coax to reduce the pF/m in the 100 Ohm region and thus reduce the probe tip compensation C2 and thus C1 input capacitance.
