Why do current transformers saturate?
The dc offset—not the magnitude of the fault current itself—is what causes the saturation. The amount of flux that accumulates in the core of a CT is directly proportional to the area under the voltage (or current) curve. A given CT can handle some maximum amount of flux before it saturates.
