What is the relationship between Vin and Vout?
In a step-down switching regulator, the normal relationship between the voltages is Vin > Vout. Strictly speaking, Vin during normal operation is the voltage equal to Vout plus the voltage drop between the input and output. For example, for a Vout of 3.3 V, the minimum operating voltage Vin might be 3.8 V.
Are Ldos isolated?
All circuit blocks of the design are branded by the prefix “ISO” or “Non-ISO”, depending to which side of the design they belong. Therefore, the ISO LDO is not a very special isolated LDO, but is simply the LDO which is located on the isolated side of the reference design.
Where are LDOs used?
LDOs are commonly used in applications where point-of-load regulation is important, such as powering digital ICs, DSPs, FPGAs and low-power CPUs. The load in such applications has multiple modes of operation, which require different supply currents.
When do you need an isolated power supply?
There are several cases where an isolated power supply may be required or provide some benefit in an application. These include safety compliance, the breaking of ground loops, and level shifting. Safety requirements are a common reason to use an isolated power converter.
Is the isolation voltage of a power converter absolute?
Isolation is not absolute. At high enough voltages, the insulation will break down and current will flow. Datasheets will usually list the isolation voltage, which is the voltage which may be applied across the isolation for a short duration without current flowing.
What can isolated power converters be used for?
Reinforced insulation: is a single barrier equivalent to two layers of basic. Because the input and output of isolated supplies do not share a ground, they can be used to break up ground loops. Circuits that are sensitive to noise can benefit from this by having their ground broken up and separated from noisy circuits that could cause problems.
