What is sense resistor where and how it can be used in circuit?
A current sensing resistor is designed for low resistance so as to minimize power consumption. As a result, the calibrated resistance senses the current flowing through it in the form of a voltage drop which is detected and monitored by the control circuitry.
How can we measure resistance?
Resistance can be calculated by measuring the current and voltage using Ohm’s Law. As a result, a circuit’s resistance value can be determined if the current and voltage measured values are known. Analog multimeters and digital multimeters employ the measurement principle of Ohm’s Law to measure resistance.
Do you need a resistor to measure current?
Most ammeters have an built-in resistor to measure the current. However, when the current is too high for the ammeter, a different setup is required. The solution is to place the ammeter in parallel with an accurate shunt resistor. Another term that is sometimes used for this type of resistor is ammeter shunt.
What is sense connection?
Power supplies often have voltage sense connections. If the power supply is connected with the sense wires connected the sense wires provide the power supply with a measurement of the voltage at the resistor, no current flows in the sense wires because the sense connections have a high input impedance.
How does a current sense resistor circuit work?
The above current sense resistor circuit shows how a shunt resistor is placed in a current carrying path and how the voltage drop across the resistor can be calculated by using a Current Sense Amplifier. You can know more about how current sense amplifiers work for following the linked article.
When to use Kelvin connection with sense resistor?
Kelvin connection of the −IN and +IN inputs to the sense resistor should be used in all but the lowest power applications. Solder connections and PC board interconnections that carry high current can cause significant error in measurement due to their relatively large resistances.
How to increase TCR with current sense resistors?
The aim is to minimize the conductive path shared between the current path and the sensing loop (figure 2), which would increase both the tolerance and the TCR of the mounted part. You can do this by connecting the voltage sense tracks to the inner edges of the solder pads (figure 3.)
Can a voltage sense resistor be connected parallel?
Resistors may be connected in parallel with voltage sense connections made to just one of the resistors, provided the track layout ensures equal distribution of current between resistors.
