Should thermal pads be grounded?
It is not mandatory, as the device will properly work without. And depending on manufacturing method, soldering the thermal pad might be complicated (especially in prototyping with manual soldering).
Do thermal pads dry out?
Some thermal pads will dry out because of the material they are made out of. BUT, if you are talking about the thermal pads on the memory chips of the GPU, you can just leave them there, as memory doesn’t create as much heat as an actual core does.
Does stacking thermal pads work?
You can but I don’t suggest you do it. Every time you stack a pad a small amount of air will be between them. Air is an insulator and it will counter act the thermal performance of the pads. The more you stack the more air in between them.
How do you solder a ground pad?
To solder pads to ground planes:
- Use a temperature controlled soldering iron with a heat output of around 50W or more, not a constant-power soldering iron (typical heat output of those is 18 to 25W).
- The bit on the soldering iron needs to have a large enough flat area to conduct sufficient heat to the pad.
How long can thermal pads last?
However, the most common number is about three years if the bottle or package has not been opened. Now, it gets tricky because you do not know when your bottle was manufactured. If your thermal paste was sitting around on a shelf for some time, it is likely that the paste has degraded in some way.
Do thermal pads degrade over time?
I would say it degrades the same as thermal paste over a longer period. So you would have to replace the thermal pad maybe after 2-3 years compared to thermal paste 1-2 years. Some thermal pad are wet type, have grease on them.
Can you put 2 thermal pads?
2mm is a not uncommon thickness for a thermal pad, but it is much better to have one continuous solid than two with a tiny layer of air in the middle.
Can I layer thermal pads?
Yes you can but the performance will be decreased as there will be air trapped between the thermal pads no matter what you do. Plus you are adding another surface for the heat to be transferred (thermal pad to thermal pad).
