Is USB-C connector directional?
USB Type-C is designed to be bi-directional. A bidirectional Type-C cable can transmit video signals, audio, and as much as 100W of power (with the USB-PD standard). It can do that in either direction, too. So you can use one phone to charge another.
Can USB-C transmit data?
Most USB-C ports are built on the second-generation USB 3.1 data-transfer standard, which can theoretically deliver data at speeds of up to 10Gbps — twice as fast as USB 3.0 and first-gen USB 3.1, which both top out at 5Gbps.
How do you route a USB?
Route the high-speed USB signals using a minimum of vias and corners. This reduces signal reflections and impedance changes. When it becomes necessary to turn 90°, use two 45° turns or an arc instead of making a single 90° turn. This reduces reflections on the signal traces by minimizing impedance discontinuities.
How are CC signals routed in USB Type C?
USB Type-C CC Signals: The CC signals should be routed as single-ended traces with 50Ω impedance. Do not route the CC signals as a differential pair. The CC signals are sensitive so they should be routed without stubs across the board.
How are USB 3.x signals routed on a PCB?
I’m designing an open source USB Type-C Switch (KVM Style), and I started to route the USB 3.x SuperSpeed+ and USB 2.x HighSpeed differential signal pairs on the PCB. The switch will have 2 input + 1 output USB Type-C ports.
What to do with USB Type C pins?
If the USB Type-C TX and RX pins on a connector are used for alternate modes other than Display Port, route them per your system specifications, or to SuperSpeed Length Matching steps 1 through 5 above, whichever is more tightly restricted. Route all USB High Speed signals with 90Ω differential impedance traces without stubs.
How is a USB Type-C plug inserted into a receptacle?
The USB Type-C plug can be inserted into a receptacle in either one of two orientations, therefore the CC pins enable a method for detecting plug orientation in order to determine which SuperSpeed USB data signal pairs are functionally connected through the cable.
