Does RCD work on DC?
Type B RCDs can detect sinusoidal AC, pulsating DC, composite of multi-frequency as well as smooth DC residual currents. In addition, tripping conditions are defined with different frequencies from 50Hz to 1kHz.
What faults do RCD detect?
A pure RCD will detect imbalance in the currents of the supply and return conductors of a circuit. But it cannot protect against overload or short circuit like a fuse or a miniature circuit breaker (MCB) does (except for the special case of a short circuit from live to ground, not live to neutral).
Does an RCD protect against short circuit?
RCDs are often confused with Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) or fuses. Circuit breakers protect property, RCDs protect people. RCDs in contrast, do not protect against overload or short circuit. It is therefore important that any circuit also has overload protection from an MCB.

We’ve found that fixed RCDs are about 97% reliable. This improves if they are tested regularly. If you have fixed RCD protection, it will reduce the risk of electric shock to you and your family. It can also protect your home against the risk of fire caused by faulty wiring or appliances.
Do all circuits have to be RCD protected?
BS 7671 requires most if not all circuits in domestic premises to be RCD-protected. Separate RCD protection is not necessarily required for each circuit of an installation but, in order to minimize the likelihood and consequences of tripping, a single (‘front end’) RCD should not be used to protect all the circuits.
