What are the important parameters of a DC power supply?
5 Basic DC Parameters
- Input Voltage Range. The input voltage range determines the maximum and minimum allowable input supply for the LDO.
- Output Voltage Range. The output voltage of an LDO may be fixed or programmable.
- Dropout Voltage.
- Maximum Output Current.
- Output Voltage Accuracy.
What are the specifications of power supply?
Power Supply Specifications
| Description | Specification |
|---|---|
| Voltage | 100 to 240 VAC (+ or – 10%). |
| Current rating | 16 A maximum at 100 to 120 VAC and 1451-W output. 16 A maximum at 200 to 240 VAC and 3051-W output. For current ratings of plugs, see Figure 6-3 on page 6-154 . |
| Frequency | 50 to 60 Hz (nominal) (+ or – 3 Hz for full range). |
How does regulated power supply work?
A regulated power supply is an embedded circuit; it converts unregulated AC (Alternating Current) into a constant DC. With the help of a rectifier it converts AC supply into DC. The output from the regulated power supply may be alternating or unidirectional, but is nearly always DC (Direct Current).
What should be achieved by regulated power supply?
In fancy electrical terms, a regulated power supply provides a constant output voltage, independent of the output current. A regulated power supply with multiple regulators can offer multiple output voltages for operating different devices.
What is the advantage of power supply?
Advantages for linear mode power supplies include simplicity, reliability, low noise levels and low cost. These power supplies, also known as linear regulators (LR), have a very simple design in that they require few components making it an easy device for design engineers to work with.
Can power supply work without a fan?
“passive” means that the PSU comes completely without a fan, the heat dissipation is completely being taken care of by a big heat sink – which means that the system is pretty much noiseless. Both of these technologies claim to be extremely silent as no mechanical noises occur when the fan doesn’t rotate.
Why are ripple parameters important in power supply?
The ripple and noise parameters are another important power supply specification. It is possible that noise and other impulses on the power line can be transferred to the output of the circuit that is being powered. In order to minimise this, especially for sensitive circuits it is necessary to ensure that the power lines are as clean as possible.
How are voltages measured in a power supply?
The parameter is measured as a percentage or absolute voltage change per degree C. Typically, this might be in the region of 0.02% / °C or 2 mV / °C. Naturally these figures are only a guide to what some supplies state.
How is the stability of a power supply measured?
For the stability specification, the output voltage of the power supply will be measured over a period of time under constant load and input voltage and the voltage drift measured. Typically, this will be a few millivolts (e.g. five to ten) over a period of ten hours. Power supply current limiting and over-voltage
Do you need to know the power supply specifications?
When selecting a power supply, either linear power supply or switch mode power supply, it is necessary to understand the various specifications to choose the right one.
