How does an ideal diode work?
An ideal diode is one kind of an electrical component that performs like an ideal conductor when voltage is applied in forward bias and like an ideal insulator when the voltage is applied in reverse bias. This diode operates like a switch. When the diode is in forward bias, it works like a closed switch.
What is the characteristic of a diode?
Basic static characteristics of diodes are the forward voltage VF and forward current IF, and the reverse voltage and current VR and IR. The area surrounded by the orange dashed line in the diagram on the right indicates the usable area of rectifying diodes.
Where is the body diode in a power MOSFET?
Body Diode: An intrinsic body diode is formed in the body-drain p-n junction connected between the drain and source as shown in Figure 1. Figure 2 shows the circuit symbols for both N- channel and P-channel enhancement types Power MOSFETs.
What are the components of an ideal diode?
Presented in this article is a small circuit that mimics the behavior of of a diode with a near zero forward voltage drop. As seen in the schematic below, the ideal diode consists of a p-channel MOSFET Q2 and a voltage comparator consisting of a matched PNP transistor pair Q1A and Q1B.
How does a MOSFET circuit work in a positive rail?
It uses inexpensive components consisting of a P-MOSFET (for use in the positive rail) with a dual PNP transistor and two resistors. Q1 and Q2 form a current mirror circuit. The indicated values of R1 and R2 cause Q2 to be on and thus M1 off (Vgs ≈0V), when there is no voltage difference between the drain and source of M1.
What is the ideal voltage drop for a MOSFET?
The maximum voltage drop, when the battery is providing 2A current is ≈32mV with the MOSFET shown, demonstrating the near ideal diode operation. The current mirror operation is very sensitive to any offset between the two transistor base-emitter voltages, which could possibly allow some current conduction in the reverse direction.
