What is a welder choke?
The choke mechanism controls the current to the arc welder. The “choke” mechanism controls the amount of current, or amperage, that flows through an arc welder. Arc welders use direct current, rather than alternating current. The primary means of controlling the arc welder’s power, then, is via the choke mechanism.
How do you make choke coils?
You can make a choke coil by taking a pencil, and wrapping copper wire around the pencil. The thickness of the wire, and the number of wraps(turns) all depend on what you are trying to choke. Different frequencies need different construction.
Why are choke coils used?
In electronics, a choke is an inductor used to block higher-frequency alternating currents while passing direct current (DC) and lower-frequencies alternating current (AC) in an electrical circuit.
Which device is used in choke coil and why?
As a choke coil works as an inductor, it is used in electrical circuits to allow DC current to flow through the circuit and block AC current from passing through circuits. Why choke coil, because it wastes power in the form of heat which could happen in an ordinary resistor.
Is a choke coil?
A choke coil is an inductance coil of very small resistance used for controlling current in an a.c. circuit. If a resistance is used to control current, there is wastage of power due to Joule heating effect in the resistance.
What kind of inductor do I need for choke Weld?
The point is in the process the parts I needed were the diodes and the inductor to smooth the DC converted amps, otherwise you get a ripply waveform. In this machine the inductor is made from solid copper rod about 5/16″ diam formed into a 3″ diam coil with about 20 coils.
Can a DC arc welding choke break down?
However, for DC arc welding, the power will have gone through a rectifier prior to reaching the choke, which can vary the voltage. If the wires in the coil are insufficient for the voltage, however, the choke may break down.
What makes a choke Weld Talk message board?
In this machine the inductor is made from solid copper rod about 5/16″ diam formed into a 3″ diam coil with about 20 coils. The core is formed with a whole lot of ferrite rods inside a cardboard tube, and this is placed in the + line out after the diodes have rectified the AC to DC.
Which is better coil or choke for welder?
Coil is rather good however the pencil size wire is overheating thus I applied a PC fan to cool it down. As this machine is for heavy use and must be stable day by day, I vote for non-smps machines except the cases if they must be mobile to change from place to place.
