How does star delta starter reduce starting current?
A star delta starter reduces the starting current by connecting the motor winding in Star at the time of starting. This reduces the voltage across the winding. The voltage across the winding will be( 1/Sqrt(3))*Line Voltage.
How does a wye delta starter work?
Theory of operation: – Wye ~ Delta Starter Voltage is reduced during the start of the motor, connecting the motor in a Wye configuration will reduce the line current of the motor by a factor of 33%. The torque of the motor is proportional to the square of the voltage applied, resulting in a reduction of 33% torque.
Is there a problem with the star delta starter?
Star / Delta starter bangs out the mcb instantly at the transition star to delta. I have checked the motor IR all >100M between windings and to earth. All windings good 0.66ohm each. I checked all the wiring through can’t find any issues and matches drawing. I changed the mcb from C32 to the manufacturers spec C50.
How are motors connected in a star and delta system?
I am trying to understand how motors are connected in a star and delta system. I studied the star delta starter from this link. It describes the connection of a motor connection as in following diagram. Above diagram shows V1 and V2 connected to the same phase through the main contactor and delta contactor.
Is the Delta contactor interlocked with the star contactor?
The star and delta contactors are each interlocked via a NC contact on the other. If I disconnect the delta contactor it starts fine in star (runs for 8 sec). The compressor dump valve is working so the motor starts against minimal load. It is getting up to a stable and reasonable speed in about 5 seconds.
Which is the correct breaker for a star Delta?
The correct breaker is a C50, for the 10mm2 cable and it starts fine DOL on that. If the star delta was working correctly it would operate on a C32. but the f.l.c. is 34A. The motor starts offload so in fact it will be significantly less until the compressor is up to pressure.
