What happens to current when power factor is low?
A lower power factor causes a higher current flow for a given load. As the line current increases, the voltage drop in the conductor increases, resulting in a lower voltage at the equipment. With an improved power factor, the voltage drop in the conductor is reduced, improving the voltage at the equipment.
Does power factor affect current?
Description: Power factor is the relationship (phase) of current and voltage in AC electrical distribution systems. Low power factor, electrically speaking, causes heavier current to flow in power distribution lines in order to deliver a given number of kilowatts top an electrical load.
What influences the power factor?

Why do we have a low power factor?
Today we have interconnected power systems. According to different seasons and time, the loading conditions of the power system vary. There are peak as well as low load periods. When the system is loaded lightly, the voltage increases and the current drawn by the machines also increases. This results in low power factor.
When does power factor increase, current decreases?
It is clear from both the equations (1) and (2) that for a constant power and supply voltage, Current (I) is inversely proportional to CosФ i.e power factor. In other words, we can say that when power factor increase, current decreases and vice-versa. So in case of low power factor, the load current will increase.
How to improve the power factor of a circuit?
For pure inductance, current lags behind voltage by 90°. For pure capacitance, current leads voltage by 90°. So, the solution is simple. If we use capacitors to draw leading current, we can cancel the effects of lagging inductive current and hence improve the power factor. The above fig shows a common circuit.
How does low power factor affect transmission lines?
Effect on Transmission lines (Greater conductor size and cost): At low power factor, to transmit a fixed amount of power at a constant voltage the conductor will have to carry more current. As the current carrying capacity of the conductor is directly proportional to the cross-sectional area of the conductor.
