What is the gate voltage of a microcontroller?
This is much less than the many MOSFETs, which can be in the thousands of pF. Also these MOSFETs have a higher gate voltage. A 3.3V or 5V signal, which is the maximum of a pulse modulated signal delivered by a microcontroller, is often not enough for the MOSFET. Usually 8-12V is required to fully turn on the MOSFET.
How does the gate charge affect the MOSFET?
Along with the switching frequency this will give you the current needed to charge the gate capacitance of the MOSFET. The higher the gate charge, the higher the dissipation losses. Switching losses are also affected by the drain-source voltage, the drain current, the switching frequency and the rise and fall times.
Why do you need a resistor at the gate of a MOSFET?
A resistor in series between the MOSFET gate and driver give you the chance to adjust the speed of your MOSFET switching. A pull down at the gate of the MOSFET, may or may not needed. You can refer to here. Thanks for contributing an answer to Electrical Engineering Stack Exchange!
Do you need a pulldown resistor for a gates?
No, you do NOT requires a pulldown resistor for the gates. This is already built into the driver and the driver when powered on will immediately have a defined state. You MAY require a series resistor since the the driver is rated for only 1.5A maximum.
How is a gate capacitor used in a transistor?
As a transistor requires a particular gate voltage in order to switch on, the gate capacitor must be charged to at least the required gate voltage for the transistor to be switched on. Similarly, to switch the transistor off, this charge must be dissipated meaning that the gate capacitor must be discharged.
What kind of transistor is a MOSFET?
It is a special type of field-effect transistor (FET) and is the key component in high frequency, high efficiency switching applications across the electronics industry. A MOSFET is a voltage controlled device. It has four terminals: a gate, a drain, a source and bulk.
Where are the capacitors in a MOSFET located?
A MOSFET has various internal capacitors that play a big part on the switching operations. The values of these capacitors can be found by looking at the datasheet and using the following equations: Another parameter to look for is the total gate charge.
