What is inside an AC adapter?
Inside the AC adaptor are two wire windings that wrap around a single iron core. The first of the windings receives the 120-volt alternating current delivered to the electrical outlet, and creates an electric field in the iron core.

A simple AC adapter consists of a transformer, a rectifier, and an electronic filter. The transformer initially converts a relatively high-voltage alternating current that is supplied by an electrical outlet to a lower voltage suitable for the device being powered.

Essentially, a rectifier is an electrical device used to convert alternating current (AC) into direct current (DC) by allowing a current to flow through the device in one direction only. Diodes work like one-way valves within the rectifier to maintain this flow of current.

This additional voltage drop may be insignificant when large voltages are rectified, but in low voltage power supplies where the AC from the secondary winding of the mains transformer may be only a few volts, this 0.6V drop across the diode junction may have to be compensated for, by having a slightly higher transformer secondary voltage.

There may also be a need for safety devices such as thermal fuses to disconnect the transformer if overheating occurs, and electrical isolation between primary and secondary windings, for electrical safety. Three types of silicon diode rectifier circuit may be used, each having a different action in the way that the AC input is converted to DC.
How does AC power convert to DC power?
The AC power moves into a transformer to change the voltage. After the power supply attains the correct voltage, the electricity travels to the rectifier where it converts back to DC power. As with AC-DC power supplies, DC-DC models may require regulators to smooth out the signal.
