Is it better to solder or crimp speaker wires?
Crimping technologies enabled far more rapid and consistent wire terminations compared to soldering. When done right, this crimped connection can be much stronger and longer lasting than a soldered connection, and have electrical resistance of the equivalent length of wire.
Does solder affect sound?
As long as the solder is used properly, and makes a solid connection, then the type of solder makes zero impact in audio quality. The flux inside the solder, on the other hand, can make a big impact. But here too, if used properly, it won’t matter.
Which is the best soldering wire?

How do you connect speaker wires together?
Follow these steps:
- Cut & strip the speaker wire (at least 1/2″ length of bare wire is needed).
- Hold up both ends to form an “X” shape with the wire facing opposite directions.
- Hold both ends and tightly twist each end around the other until they’re completely wrapped over each other.
Should I solder banana plugs?
I find it’s permanent, and the plugs are much less expensive than the screw type. It’s a good idea to solder bare wire if you’re not using any type of termination, to keep the frayed wires from touching the opposite terminal and shorting out your amp. Soldering also prevents oxidation of bare wire.
Do you need to heat speaker wire before soldering?
Place the soldering iron below the wires to heat them to soldering temperature. Once the wires have reached the appropriate temperature the flux will begin to boil and turn brown. Simply touch the solder wire to the speaker wire and tabs to solder them. DO NOT melt the solder by making direct contact with the soldering iron.
How do you solder wire to speaker tabs?
Procedure for soldering speaker wire directly to speaker tabs Power down the sound system and disconnect it from the electrical outlet. Be sure there is not electricity running through the sound system before proceeding. Measure the distance you want your speaker wire to reach then cut the wire to that length.
What’s the best way to connect a speaker wire?
Cut & strip the speaker wire (at least 1/2″ length of bare wire is needed). Hold up both ends to form an “X” shape with the wire facing opposite directions. Hold both ends and tightly twist each end around the other until they’re completely wrapped over each other.
Is it OK to use plumbers solder on speakers?
You can rule that out as a fault down the road someday when you have intermittent issues from a flakey cord. Be sure you use electronics grade solder too. Some guys get out the plumbers solder and resin which is highly corrosive and should never be used on electronic circuits.
