Where do you put a balun?
Select a balun closest to the antenna feedpoint impedance (you’ll have to get this from textbooks or modeling), and use it at the feedpoint or where the feedline from the antenna ends. Be sure the feedline between the balun and antenna feedpoint matches the antenna impedance as closely as possible.

Having one may help prevent RF from coming down the line into the shack and may improve the radiation characteristics of the dipole, but I’ve run dipoles connected straight to coax without a problem. Do dipoles require baluns?
Yes, a balun is needed. All balanced antennas such as dipoles, Yagis and hexbeams that are fed with unbalanced feed lines such as coax, require a choke balun. Without a choke balun, common mode RF currents flow on the outside of the coax making the feedline act like another antenna.

This is a 4:1 Current Balun.That means it can match a 200ohm antenna to a 50 feed line. If you plan on stringing up a dipole you use 2 equal lengths of wire with the Balun in the middle.
