Why do I use a DMM to measure current?
Current consists of a flow of electrons around a circuit, and it is necessary to be able to monitor the overall flow of electrons. When using a multimeter to measure current, the only way that can be used to detect the level of current flowing is to break into the circuit so that the current passes through the meter.
How does a DMM measure current?
The DMM measures the voltage drop across the current shunt and, using Ohm’s Law, cal- culates the value of the current. DMM, digital multimeter. An instrument that uses a digital display to show the value of a measured signal. DMMs feature greater durability, resolution, and far more accuracy than analog meters.
Does a DMM have to be in series to measure current?
Turn off the power in the circuit being measured. A multimeter must be inserted in series in a circuit in order to measure current. See the diagram below. Turn the dial on the meter to the highest current range (or the 10A range if the probe is in the 10A socket).
How does a DMM work?
To perform a measurement with a DMM simply connect V+ to one end of the resistor and V – to the other end and set the DMM to measure resistance. The DMM supplies a constant current source to the resistor and the meter measures the voltage across it, the voltage being proportional to the resistance.
What does DMM stand for?
DMM
| Acronym | Definition |
|---|---|
| DMM | Digital Music Manager |
| DMM | Domain Management Module |
| DMM | Delay Modulation Mark |
| DMM | Division Marketing Manager |
How does a DMM measure the RMS of a circuit?
A DMM can measure the rms AC voltage input to a circuit by measuring AC voltage across the input. A DMM set to AC current range will measure rms AC current when placed in series with the circuit. Multiplying the two values will give you apparent power in VA units.
When to reset the DMM to voltage settings?
A good practice is to always reset the DMM to voltage measurement settings after making a current measurement. Use the NC (‘not connected’) terminal as a node to connect the positive battery terminal to the positive lead of the DMM. Note the current value displayed on the DMM.
When does the DMM measure the resistance of an element?
The DMM can only measure the resistance of an element when it is disconnected from the circuit. Remember to turn off the power source or the value measured will be inaccurate.
When do you need to measure the current flow?
Measuring current Figure 4 shows the steps that should be followed when measuring current. The measurement of current is rarely performed when troubleshooting, as the circuit path has to be opened to insert the digital multimeter in series with the current flow.
