Why are wires round?
Round wires are easier to fit with less electric loss Round wires fit easily into round holes, unlike other shapes that are difficult to insert, and are also costlier to make. Also, circular shaped conductors help for minimum loss of electricity.
Does the shape of the conductor matter?
The length of conductor be l and cross sectional area be A then Resistance (R) can be written as R=(ρl/A). Cross sectional area depends on the shape so the resistance depends on the shape of conductor.
Why are conductors cylindrical?
The fact that current that flows through the wire is depended on the wire cross section area, the circular shape is the maximized area for a given amount of material; therefore, a cylindrical wire is much more efficient.
Why are copper cables wrapped in plastic?
The plastic sheath also provides additional corrosion protection for the copper sheath. The metal tube shields the conductors from electromagnetic interference. The metal sheath also physically protects the conductors, most importantly from accidental contact with other energised conductors.
How will you show experimentally that metals are good conductors of heat?
Let us take a knife with a heat resistant handle and put it on flame for two minutes till it’s warm enough. Put the knife on butter and look at the melting process. The butter starts melting and this shows that metal is a good conductor of heat.
Why is electric wire covered with plastic?
Covering electrical wiring using plastic ensures that the current doesn’t flow outside the system. This avoids shocks, short-circuit etc. Plastics are non-reactive and poor conductors of electricity or to be precise, they are insulators. They do not allow the electric current to pass through them easily.
Why do copper cables have a round cross section?
A round cross section allows the wire to flex in any direction equally. Not strictly copper but for larger cables you do get triangular cores. They tend to use aluminium for larger cores like these. In industry, solid (retangular) metal (usually copper) buss bars are used, generally for high current applications: …so, not always round.
Why is copper used to make electrical wires?
Companies can use other conductive metals to create electrical wires. Unless they use silver, though, the high conductivity properties of copper allow for a greater distance of electrical current travel. Companies can create longer, better performing electrical wires using copper instead of most other conductive metals.
Why is there a copper wire at the outdoor faucet?
The outdoor faucet was turned on today (45 degrees), shortly after we discovered a leak in the house. We’re not sure if the faucet broke or the pipe fractured/burst. After pulling back the drywall we noticed that there is a copper wire in conduit bracketed to the water pipe at the faucet.
Why is round wire the most cost effective wire?
A round wire maximizes the cross-section per unit of material used, so it is the most cost effective at providing a given gauge or capacity. It also has the side-effect of providing the most surface area on the surface of the conductor for a given cross-sectional area of the overall wire.
