What is noise figure and what is its significance?
Noise figure (NF) and noise factor (F) are measures of degradation of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), caused by components in a signal chain. It is a number by which the performance of an amplifier or a radio receiver can be specified, with lower values indicating better performance.
What is the typical range of the noise figure?
Typical noise figures for practical receivers are in the range of ~2 to 10dB depending on power, supply voltage, process and circuit design. A receiver whose spot NF is 3 dB has an input noise power, Ni that is equivalent to available noise power of the source, or kT.
What is ideal value of noise figure?
It is just a ratio of signal power to the noise power. For an ideal conditions, SNR at the input of an amplifier should be equal to SNR at the output of an amplifier because signal power and noise power, both gets amplified.
How is the noise factor expressed in decibels?
Noise figure is the noise factor, expressed in decibels: NF (decibels)=noise figure =10*log(F) Noise figure is more often used in microwave engineering, but noise calculations use the noise factor, as we will soon see. Starting May 2009, our discussion of noise temperature has been moved to a separate page.
What is the significance of the noise figure?
The concept of Noise Figure allows the sensitivity of any amplifier to be compared to an ideal (lossless and noiseless) amplifier which has the same bandwidth and input termination. Noise Figure (NF) is a measure of how much a device (such an amplifier) degrades the Signal to Noise ratio (SNR).
Why does the signal to noise ratio always worsen?
Signal to noise ratio always worsens from input to output due to entropy or one of those other depressing laws of the universe; as the S/N ratio at output is less than S/N ratio at input, noise factor is always greater than unity. Noise figure is the noise factor, expressed in decibels:
How to measure the impact of noise in a system?
One of the best ways of understanding the impact of noise in a system is to focus on a characteristic called ‘noise figure’, which can be used to measure how much noise each component in a system, as well as the overall system, creates.
