- Rosin based flux – Rosin flux is slightly acidic when molten (able to dissolve surface oxides without etching the base material) and noncorrosive at room temperature.
- Water soluble flux – Water soluble flux is generally highly acidic and corrosive if left on the base material for long.
What are the 2 primary types of flux?
Answer: The so called water soluble fluxes are divided into two categories, organic and inorganic based on composition. Organic fluxes are more active than RA rosin, and inorganic are the most active of all.
What is rosin based flux?
Rosin (R) flux is a combination of rosin and solvent best suited for clean and easy-to-solder surfaces. Rosin is hard, not conductive, and general corrosion-resistant. Rosin flux residuals may be left on the assembly or removed with a compatible solvent.
Do you need to clean rosin flux?
Yes, rosin flux should be cleaned off of a printed circuit board (PCB) after soldering is completed. If the flux residue is from a rework process, it acts as a fault tag in the rework area, calling attention to the work even if there shouldn’t be a concern.
Should I use rosin flux?
Rosin activated flux cleans best, but will leave a significant amount of residue behind — because of this, rosin activated flux is rarely used. The main advantage of using a no-clean flux is that you won’t need to clean the surface after soldering, because they do not affect electrical conductivity.
What removes rosin flux?
Isopropyl alcohol works, but what REALLY works is ethanol. Dedicated flux removing chemicals are mostly ethanol and just make the flux disappear.
How do you clean rosin flux?
The most common way to clean flux residues from a repair area is to saturate a cotton or foam swab with isopropyl alcohol or another cleaning solvent, and rub it around the repair area.
