What happens when a generator runs with no load?
When a generator is being run at low load, low cylinder pressure results in poor combustion, decreasing the efficiency of the engine. The poor combustion causes a cyclical issue – soot and unburned fuel residue clogs the already poorly-sealing piston rings, making the low-pressure problem even worse.
Does a generator operate only when a circuit is open?
If the generator output is left open, it produces no power. With ideal and perfect mechanical parts, it would take no torque to turn its shaft.

If your generator is continuously dying under load, it’s likely due to a clogged carburetor. When the passageways of your carburetor become clogged, it ends up blocking gas from getting to the engine. Other causes include a clogged fuel or air filter.

A gear box connects the low-speed shaft to the high-speed shaft and increases the rotational speeds from about 30-60 rpm to about 1,000-1,800 rpm. 1,000-1,800 rpm is the rotational speed required by most generators to produce electricity. Does it matter which way a generator spins?
If your generator produces DC then direction matters. If producing AC, rotational direction does not matter. with a belt driving the generator using the correctly sized pulleys to get the desired RPM. But if it’s producing AC then rotational direction does not matter.
