How does depletion region change in forward bias?
Forward bias (applying a positive voltage to the P-side with respect to the N-side) narrows the depletion region and lowers the barrier to carrier injection (shown in the figure to the right). The low current conducted under reverse bias and the large current under forward bias is an example of rectification.

Considering a simple p-n junction diode, a depletion region is a charge free region formed due to diffusion of electrons and holes from n and p regions over to p and n regions respectively due to an abrupt junction. The diffusion continues till a potential barrier sets up in the depletion region that prevents further diffusion.
Why are minority carriers at the edge of PN junctions?
Since the depletion region is only reduced in width by a minor amount, the number of minority carriers swept across the junction is essentially unchanged. The increased diffusion from one side of the junction to the other causes minority carrier injection at the edge of the depletion region.
