How is the directionality of a microphone determined?
Directionality is a microphones sensitivity to sound relative to the direction or angle from which the sound arrives. There are a number of different directional patterns available, and these are plotted in graphs known as polar patterns.
What are the three types of unidirectional microphones?
This makes unidirectional microphones effective at isolating the desired on-axis sound from both unwanted off-axis sound and ambient noise. Within the unidirectional category, there are three main polar patterns: cardioid, supercardioid, & hypercardioid.
How does a sound direction finder system work?
Sound direction locating systems hitherto in use primarily employ two bowl shaped sound transducers pivoted to rotate so that sound volume can be equalized. A line at right angles to the line of sound equalization then represents the direction from which the sound originated.
How to calculate the interior angles of microphones?
(i.e. in order to speed up the computation) If you know your linear algebra, then you can imagine that you have placed the microphones in a triangle where each microphone is 4 mm away from each other making each interior angles $60°$. So let’s assume they are in this configuration:
How is the directionality of a speech determined?
This number represents the degree the speech is enhanced compared to background noise. The following weighting factors are used for the calculation: 20% at 500Hz, 23% at 1kHz, 33% at 2kHz and 24% at 4kHz. Polar plots Polar plots are measurement plots that show the sensitivity of the directional device at different angles.
How is the direction of a sound wave determined?
The tone of the sound. If the direction of the sound waves is not from the sides, but rather from above, below or immediately in front of the face, there is no time lag between the ears. In situations such as this, the outer ear is important as it helps determine the tone of the sound.
How many decibels are there at one distance?
Decibels are not a measure of how much sound is produced, but how much sound is perceived. The same sound can be 100 decibels at one distance and 60 decibels at another. Anytime you are saying a sound is X decibels, you technically have to include a distance.
