Why do plugs have 2 or 3 pins?
In order to provide safety, an earth connection had to be fitted to 2-pole plugs for these devices. In all plug types, this earth connection was fitted as a 3rd pin. There is an exception to this, which is the Schuko plug where the earth connection is located on the side of the plug and made of metal contact surfaces.
What is a 3 pin plug used for?
3 pin plugs are designed so that mains electricity can be supplied to electrical appliances safely. A 3 pin plug consists of three pins (hence the name). Each pin must be correctly connected to the three wires in the electrical cable.
What are 3 wires in a plug?
The plug contains three wires – the live, neutral and earth wires. In a plug, the live wire (brown) and the neutral wire (blue) are the two wires that form the complete circuit with a household appliance. The earth wire (green and yellow) does not normally form part of the circuit and is included as a safety wire.
Are two pin plugs safe?
The main reason two-prong outlets are considered outdated and dangerous is due to their lack of grounding. Grounding is how electricity is safely transferred in the case of an unstable current. This increases the chance of electrical shock during short circuits, ground faults, and electrical overloads.
Why are 3 pin plugs important for electrical safety?
A 3-pin plug consists of three pins (hence the name). It is important to know how to wire a 3-pin plug correctly. The 3-pin plugs are designed so that electricity can be supplied to electrical appliances safely. Each wire has its own specified color, as shown above and each pin must be correctly connected to the three wires in the electrical cable.
Why do we need three prong plugs for AC?
The pins do not become live until the metal part is fully inside the receptacle. Much safer and more reliable than this thing…. Electrically, three prong plugs (two power pins and ground) are only electrically required for devices that need to be earth grounded.
What’s the difference between two and three pin plugs?
These devices are provided with two-pin plugs. The appliance with a metal body is always provided with a three-pin plug. Larger pin of a three-pin plug connects the earth to the body of the equipment and ensures the safety of the person operating the equipment or appliance.
Why does a 3 pin plug have ground connection?
In a 3-pin plug, the wire that is connected to the ground pin of a plug is also connected to the metal body of the equipment. If any current leakage is appearing on the metal body of the equipment then, it must be discharged safely to ground. It will prevent the users from any electric shock while using the equipment.
