Do LED lights lose brightness over time?
LEDs are long-life light sources which generally do not suddenly fail, but gradually lose their brightness and performance over time. In some poorly designed LED lights, bad heat sinking can result in overheating, which in turn could cause the LED to completely burn out or increase the rate of decline in brightness.
What are the disadvantages of using LED lights?
What are the disadvantages of LEDs?
- High up-front costs.
- Transformer compatibility.
- Potential color shift over lamp life.
- Performance standardization has not yet been streamlined.
- Overheating can cause reduced lamp life.
What happens to the resistance of an LED bulb when turned on?
BULB’s Resistance rises by 10 times when turned on. This is due to a large exponential thermal PTC (+) of a tungsten filament. Meanwhile, LEDs are just the opposite, with a small linear NTC (-) value. LEDs cannot handle negative voltages. All are rated @ -5V absolute max.
How does the brightness of an LED bulb depend?
The brightness of an LED depends primarily on the current flowing through it. A conventional incandescent bulb is effectively a resistor, it follows ohms law the V = I * R.
What happens when you double the voltage of an led?
If you double the voltage the current will double and the power used will go up by a factor of 4 (not quite true, there are some temperature related effects but close enough for now). An LED on the other hand is a diode, like most diodes it has a a relatively fixed forward bias voltage.
Why is limiting current into an led important?
Limiting current into an LED is very important. An LED behaves very differently to a resistor in circuit. Resistors behave linearly according to Ohm’s law: V = IR. For example, increase the voltage across a resistor, the current will increase proportionally, as long as the resistor’s value stays the same.
