What is dBA and dB Z?
Measurements are commonly displayed as dB(A) or dBA or as LAeq, LAFmax, LAE. Z-weighted is the flat frequency response of 8Hz to 20kHz (+/- 1.5dB), this is the actual noise that is made with no weighting at all for the human ear (Z for zero). Often used in octave band analysis and for determining environmental noise.
What is SPL and dB?
Sound pressure level (SPL) is the pressure level of a sound, measured in decibels (dB). It is equal to 20 x the Log10 of the ratio of the Route Mean Square (RMS) of sound pressure to the reference of sound pressure (the reference sound pressure in air is 2 x 10-5 N/m2, or 0,00002 Pa).
What is decibel Z?
There is, however, another type of decibel that is not so familiar to audiologists. It is the decibel (Z) or dB (Z). The Z weighting is a flat frequency response between 10 Hz and 20 kHz ±1.5 dB, excluding microphone response. Measurements made using ‘Z’ weighting are usually shown with dB(Z).
Should I use A or C weighting?
C Weighting Although the A-Weighted response is used for most applications, C-Weighting is also available on many sound level meters. C Weighting is usually used for Peak measurements and also in some entertainment noise measurement, where the transmission of bass noise can be a problem.

Is dBA higher than dB?
What Is the difference between dB and dBA? dB sound pressure levels are unweighted. dBA levels are “A” weighted according to the weighting curves to approximate the way the human ear hears. For example, a 100 dB level at 100 Hz will be perceived to have a loudness equal to only 80 dB at 1000 Hz.
Which is the correct reference for dB SPL?
The reference for dB SPL is 20 micropascals (20 μPa) or 0.0002 dynes/cm 2. Because it is easy to measure dB SPL with a condenser or free-fi eld microphone coupled to a sound level meter, sound measurements are often expressed in dB SPL.

This is why dB (A) is used. The reference quantity remains the same; 20 µPa and the units are still dB SPL, but each value has a different gain depending on the frequency in order to better represent human auditory perception. The blue curve shows the gain for a type A weighting.
What’s the difference between Decibel A and B?
The decibel A filter is widely used. dB(A) roughly corresponds to the inverse of the 40 dB (at 1 kHz) equal-loudness curve for the human ear. With the dB(A) filter the sound level meter is less sensitive to very high and very low frequencies.
Which is the reference quantity for DBM and DBV?
For example, dBm means that the reference variable is the milliwatt; dBV, the volt. In acoustics, sound is a change in pressure relative to atmospheric pressure. Thus, the reference quantity is the smallest pressure change detectable by the ear (hearing threshold), 20 µPa in air, which corresponds to 0 dB SPL.
