How does a magnetic ring launcher work?

How does a magnetic ring launcher work?

The alternating (direction-changing) electric current from the power outlet in the wall charges the core, which then creates a magnetic field. The magnetic field then induces a current in the closed rings, which then create their own magnetic fields. When the magnet fields repel each other, the ring is launched.

Why does the bulb light up when current is passing through the solenoid in the ring launcher?

When it is in the region of the changing magnetic field, the bulb lights up. So, why does the aluminum ring jump up like that? The coil makes a changing magnetic field that then induces an electric current in the ring. This electric current in the ring then interacts with the magnetic field to make it repel.

Why does the aluminum ring jump up when the strength of the magnetic field upward direction intercepted by the loop is suddenly increased?

Quick Physics: The ring feels a greater magnetic force, which pushes it higher. The colder the ring it, the less resistance there is and the more current can flow through it. More current means a bigger magnetic field and the ring goes even higher!

Why does a wire jump?

When a current is passed through a magnetic field, the magnetic field exerts a force on the wire in a direction perpendicular to both the current and the magnetic field. That is the idea here with the jumping wire.

Does it matter whether the magnet is moving or whether the coil of wire is moving?

It does not matter, of course, whether you keep the coil stationary and move the magnet, or keep the magnet stationary and move the coil. What is important is their motion relative to each other, which is what determines the change in magnetic flux through the coil.

What makes the net force on a Ring Launcher?

There has to be some magnetic field outside the coil. So, it must be this magnetic field on the outside of the coil that is responsible for the net force on the ring. Usually, we call these external fields fringe fields (which always makes me think of the surrey with the fringe on top). So, this ring launcher isn’t quite as simple as I thought.

What is the physics of the electromagnetic Ring Launcher?

This launcher is basically just a coil of wire hooked up to an alternating current circuit (the iron in the middle just makes the effect greater). The first part of this demo is to show that electric currents create magnetic fields. You can show this by placing a wire directly over a compass.

Can you shoot your eye out with a Ring Launcher?

Suppose I looked straight down the axis of this solenoid with the ring. Of course, you should never actually do this. You could shoot your eye out with the ring. I am using the typical convention to represent vectors coming out of the screen as a circle with a dot (consider it to be an arrow and you are looking at the tip).
