How do you know if a capacitor is broken?
When examining a failed electronic device, the failed capacitors can easily be recognized by clearly visible symptoms that include the following:
- Bulging of the vent on top of the capacitor.
- Broken or cracked vent, often accompanied with visible crusty rust-like brown or red dried electrolyte deposits.
Does a bad capacitor always bulge?
Not all broken capacitors will bulge, swell and burst, however. If there are no physical signs, an oscilloscope–a device that displays how a voltage or current signal varies over time–may be used to examine the voltage on the capacitors.

An electrolytic capacitor’s chemicals boil and expand when exposed to excessive voltage. This causes the whole capacitor to bulge.
Why do capacitors leak?
So, to get back to your question: even though it may seem like it, by far the most important reason that electrolytic capacitors seem to leak more is that they simply have more capacitance and, by association, larger surface areas and thinner insulators which both contribute to higher leakage.
Do capacitors wear out?
Capacitors are at great risk for failure. While it is certain that over time some wear out and no longer adequately serve their purpose, capacitors can also fail prematurely. If a capacitor becomes damaged, either externally or internally, there is a good chance that it will fail.
Do capacitors go bad on the shelf?
Many manufacturers specify a typical shelf life for a capacitor or an assembly containing capacitors. The manufacture’s stated shelf life for an aluminum electrolytic capacitor can range from 2 to 10 years, depending on the quality of the component (Kogler, 1999).
What does a bad capacitor look like on a computer?
Sometimes really bad caps can leak their electrolyte out of themselves too. Then you may see this brown crust around the capacitor, or perhaps on it. It often looks somewhat like a dried coffee stain. In this image I have tried to photograph the slight bulge on the top of this bad capacitor.
What are the visual signs of capacitor failure?
The electrolyte discharge can also be larger covering the top of the cap with a dried substance which can be black, orange, brown, white or a similar colour. The bulging could be only slight or it could be quite obvious with possibly even the vents being completely broken.
What happens when a filter capacitor goes bad?
Bad caps cause a lot of electronics to fail long before they should today. This is a huge issue. Any electronics that you have that plugs into a wall outlet has filter capacitors in it. When they go so does your whole piece of equipment then too. If you can spot bad caps for yourself you can fix this equipment for yourself too.
What happens when a capacitor is blown out?
A busted capacitor can be obviously broken (leaking brownish fluid, corroded, or with the leads severed), but sometimes it’s subtle. The top of a blown capacitor will be slightly bent outwards in a convex shape, rather than flat or slightly indented inwards like a working capacitor.
