What is linear taper?
Glossary Term: Linear Taper When used in an amplifier circuit, the output varies slowly as the pot is operated at the low end and varies more and more rapidly as the pot is operated toward the high end. This is also called an audio taper because it is most commonly used for audio volume controls.
Does changing pots affect tone?
A potentiometer or “pot”, is a variable resistor that changes your tone or volume by increasing or decreasing resistance. Adding a capacitor or “cap” to the pot turns it into a simple EQ. Turning the wiper adjusts the amount of resistance and, in turn, determines which frequencies are allowed to pass.
Do you like audio taper or linear taper?
I like audio taper for Volume and Linear for Tone. To me the answer is ‘yes’ to ‘audio or linear taper’. There is no correct answer – it’s what you like, prefer, or possible a circuit may prefer. Kind of like guitars.
What’s the difference between a linear taper pot and an audio pot?
And past “7” or “8” on the radio volume knob, it doesn’t really increase your volume anymore. It causes your signal to clip. A LINEAR taper pot increases the signal in a linear fashion. (“1” on your control is equal to 10%, “4” is equal to 40% and so forth) This works very different from an audio taper volume pot.
What’s the difference between linear taper and log taper?
Very simply, with a linear taper, if you turn the pot halfway, the resistance measured on each side will be equal. With logarithmic (aka “audio”) taper, that is not true; the resistance follows a logarithmic progression. Log taper is used because it gives a more natural progression when used for volume control.
When do you use an audio taper volume control?
An audio taper volume control is used on you car radio. You will notice that when you turn on the radio you have to rotate the knob to the right quite a bit before you get any volume.
