What is a CQ contest?
A “CQ Contest” is simply a limited CQ, just like someone can call CQ some-specific-area or CQ any-member-of-a-particular-club. I don’t think I’ve heard this variant on SSB, but I imagine in some contests it may be beneficial to actually specify the contest in question.
What is Ham Radio Contesting?
Contesting (also known as radiosport) is a competitive activity pursued by amateur radio operators. In a contest, an amateur radio station, which may be operated by an individual or a team, seeks to contact as many other amateur radio stations as possible in a given period of time and exchange information.
What is W VE in ham radio?
W/VE stations (continental United States) work as many DX stations (any non-W/VE station) in as many DXCC places (countries/areas listed in the DXCC List Manual by ARRL) as possible.
How do you respond to CQ?
If you hear a reply like, “Yes it is!” or more politely, “Yes, thanks for asking,” tune to another seemingly clear frequency and start again. Call CQ. Always include your callsign and your location in the CQ. And always make a CQ last at least 20 or 30 seconds.

If a CQ calling station sounds lonely (calling CQ and not get answers), you can call him (briefly, just send or say your callsign) and when he answers you, if you don’t understand the exchange, you can ask, “What do you need from me?”
