What is phase shift in antenna?
The phase shifters delay the radio waves progressively going up the line so each antenna emits its wavefront later than the one below it.. This causes the resulting plane wave to be directed at an angle θ to the antenna’s axis. By changing the phase shifts the computer can instantly change the angle θ of the beam.

Tapering is simply the manipulation of the amplitude contribution of an individual element to the overall antenna response.
How do phase shifters work?
Phase shifting works by taking the input signal and adding a very small amount of delay to it, and then mixing it back with the original (non-delayed) signal so that certain frequencies of the audio are in or out of phase with each other. The time delay is modulated so the delay amount changes with time.
