Why is my gearbox stiff when cold?
Viscosity change: The viscosity of transmission fluid changes and gets thicker in the cold. Shifting problems: When it’s cold, the transmission will shift harder and shift points can become delayed which can lead to yet harder shifting.
Why has my gearbox gone stiff?
This happens because, if the master cylinder and/or release cylinder is damaged or leaks, it can cause loss of pressure on the fluid, this can make the clutch not disengage properly. If the clutch and engine do not disengage properly, the manual transmission will be hard to shift all gears, or fail to shift entirely.
What does it mean when your gears are hard to shift?
Hard shifting with manual transmission usually has to do with a problem in the gear system or with the clutch. Either one of the parts of the gear system is damaged or it is just completely worn out from too much use.
Why does my transmission slip only when it’s cold?
Cold weather can wreak havoc on your vehicle’s transmission system leading to transmission slipping. In sub-temperature conditions, your vehicle’s temperature freezes, forcing it to contract, and your line fluids may begin to leak from the seals, leading to low line pressure.
Why are my gears stiff when the engine is off?
If u can change gears ok thru clutch when engines off,its your synchros kaput. Ie i can change up mostly ok from 1 to 2 to 3,but when downshifting from 3 to 2,its very difficult. Its to do with the hub rotating speed and synchros not lining up with enough friction behind them.Think you’ll find after u change your oil it’ll be even worse.
Is it OK to change gears when engine is off?
Yes gear change is ok when engine is off, just feels the same as when cold.. im going to give it a oil change before i decide what next option is,maybe its never had a oil change or had one a very long time ago as the car is 8 years old If u can change gears ok thru clutch when engines off,its your synchros kaput.
Is there any improvement in gears when engine cold?
Click to expand… No no only when realised at the very end knock. Put some decent 75w-90 fully synthetic gearbox oil in when you change it, and the clutch pedal not returning is usually the spring popped off one side at the top of the pedal, as thet is what pulls the pedal back up. Hi any improvement in gears.
Why do I have a hard time shifting gears?
If the gear lever does not slot surely into a gear and feels rubbery then it’s a problem with the bushes at the bottom of the gear lever. This could have become hard and brittle, which will make it tough to change gears. Also check the gear linkage mechanism. There are two kinds of gear linkage mechanisms – cable shift or rod shift.
