Can you use a car alternator as a generator?
You can use any vehicle alternator with a built-in voltage regulator. The fan is attached to the alternator using a 3-inch washer. You can use 1/2-inch galvanized pipe to make the generator bracket. The completed generator is ready to hook up to a battery bank and provide renewable energy.
What is a regenerative alternator?
Previously, alternators were generating power all of the time, but this new alternator improves engine fuel consumption through regenerative control technology that regenerates power when the vehicle is decelerating, and by lowering consumption by not generating power at other times.
Which vehicles are well suited to use regenerative braking?
Electric vehicles (EVs) run primarily off the charge they stored when plugged into an outlet, but use regenerative braking to help top up the battery. In addition to the regenerative system, all electrified vehicles have conventional braking systems as regular vehicles do.
How do I know if my car has a smart alternator?
If your readings are around 14.4V DC then then you most likely have the traditional, non-smart alternator. If your reading is closer to 12.5-13.5V then it’s likely that you have a smart alternator.
How does a smart alternator work?
The smart alternator system, also known as variable voltage alternators, allow the vehicle to control the output voltage and current from the alternator based on vehicle operating conditions. The idea behind this is to reduce electrical load and in turn mechanical load on the engine by the alternator.
How can a car alternator be utilized to generate?
Whatever your prime mover (water, wind, donkey on a treadmill) the alternator from a car will waste 30–50% of the input power as heat, especially at the upper end of the current range. You can ameliorate that by allowing the alternator to put out more than 12 volts.
Why does an electric car not have an alternator?
An electric car doesn’t have an engine or gas/diesel fuel. Instead, it has an electric motor and rechargeable battery. We COULD use the battery to spin the motor to spin the alternator to generate electricity. BUT at best, we would simply be using electricity to make electricity.
Can a scrap alternator be used as an alternator?
Having to use that power makes the motor a bit less efficient than a permanent magnet one, but the cost of a scrap alternator is hard to beat. The motor featured in our pictures is destined to be one of a pair providing traction in a new car for an assault on this year’s races.
How does Nissan alternator regenerative control technology work?
Using this recovered electrical energy in the navigation and air-conditioning while the engine is consuming fuel means power generation from the engine and fuel consumption can be reduced. In order to improve energy regeneration efficiency, Nissan has introduced special high-charging performance batteries in many models.
