Can codes be read if check engine light is off?
In short, yes; it’s possible to diagnose a problem with a vehicle even if the check engine light does not illuminate. A professional mechanic would start by downloading any error codes store in your 2005 Ford Explorer’s computer.
Do check engine codes get stored?
Some codes are permanently installed in the engine’s computer just for overall safety and emission requirements. However, you can actually “clear” or remove the stored codes that are currently causing a problem pretty easily. Fix the problem. You should never ignore a check engine light.
