Can I use any ignition coil on my motorcycle?
Coils should be interchangeable somewhat. You need to find the specs on the original and make sure the output numbers line up.
Does ignition coil make a difference?
In the world of performance, more is almost always better. More boost, more airflow, more fuel, more horsepower, more performance, etc. However, more voltage does not always mean better in the world of ignition coils. Davis says that the OEM coils were notorious for drop off above or about 5,000 rpm.
Does polarity of ignition coil matter?
With single fire coils, primary and secondary are connected, so polarity does have an effect. Doesn’t matter with a dual-fire coil. The primary (12v) and secondary (spark) circuits aren’t connected. With single fire coils, primary and secondary are connected, so polarity does have an effect.
When should I replace my motorcycle ignition coil?
Unless your reading is between 10,000 ohms and 12,500 ohms, your ignition coil is damaged. You should replace it but you shouldn’t need to replace the entire motorcycle ignition system.
How long do motorcycle coils last?
Typically, modern ignition coils will last 3 days or 30+ years without much trouble in between. But that doesn’t mean they can’t go bad — and some do. Replacing one during the life of one of these bikes would be unexpected, though; replacing two indicates that you’ve got another problem in your ignition system.
How do you tell if a coil is positive or negative?
You can test for correct polarity of the ignition coil by using a voltmeter. Connect the negative lead to the (-) negative terminal and the positive lead to the engine block. Set the meter on the highest volt range (these connections are the same whether you have a positive ground or negative ground electrical system).
How does the ignition coil work on a motorcycle?
The trigger coil tells the black box when to trigger the spark. It does this when a small magnet on the flywheel passes the trigger. The source coil produces the power. The black box coordinates everything and tells the ignition coil when to fire the spark plug.
Why is my CDI coil not working on my motorcycle?
This often surfaces when you have an older motorcycle with a CDI ignition and want to place the coils under computer control. Many motorcycle CDI coils will not give a good spark unless you pair them with a multi-channel CDI ignition.
Why does a CDI coil work with an inductive ignition?
With no energy storage requirements, making the coil’s inductance and resistance low lets it transfer the spark energy faster, making for the hot, short sparks that CDI ignitions specialize in. It is possible to design a coil for CDI applications that still has a high enough inductance to work with an inductive ignition.
Can a Triumph motorcycle ignition coil be replaced?
Part 2, Triumph Motorcycle Ignition Coil Replacement describes a slightly different procedure for the ignition coil replacement on the late and lamented Triumph Trophy. Note that these tips can apply to most modern Triumphs and other brands of motorcycles.
