What does wheel centric mean?
Article content. As a reminder, aftermarket wheel rims can be divided into two categories: hub-centric, meaning the large hole in the middle of the rim is the exact fit for the hub on the vehicle, and lug-centric, which means the centre hole is oversized to fit a variety of vehicles.
What is a wheel barrel?
Barrel. The part of the wheel between the outboard face and inboard rim edge is called the barrel. The barrel is shaped to create the tire mounting structures such as the drop center and the flanges.
Are all aftermarket wheels lug centric?
Most aftermarket wheels are lug-centric because this allows the manufacturer to make the wheel with a larger hub bore, so the wheel can fit a wider array of vehicles.
How do I know if my wheel is lug centric or hub centric?
The easiest way to tell the difference between the two designs is to look at the hub of a hub and wheel assembly. If the hole in the center of the wheel fits snugly against the hub, then it is hub-centric. If there is a gap between the center hole of the wheel and the hub, then it is lug-centric.
What is the difference between wheels and rims?
Many people use term “wheel” as a “rim” meaning the entire metal part to which the tire is mounted because rim and wheel are usually cast or pressed from a single piece of metal. The main difference between wheel and rim is that rim is not the whole wheel but only a part of the wheel.
Why do you need hub centric rims when driving?
This can damage wheel-bearing components and may lead to the loss of wheel nut torque and/or loose wheels. The second main concern is that in the event of an impact to the wheel from a pothole or curb-strike, the wheel studs can become bent, leading to the need for their replacement.
Are there any problems with lug centric wheels?
The first problem with lug-centric wheels is getting them installed correctly. They require an expert touch to ensure that every wheel nut is properly centred in the rim hole and has the correct torque applied. During the hectic times of winter tire season, this isn’t always done correctly and excessive vibrations can result.
