Do valve covers get torqued?
the valve cover is just that, a cover, no need to break out the torque wrench. Just dont over tighten it, it will crack. when life throws you a curve; brake late, accelerate earily. The whole point of a torque wrench is Not overtightening something.
What is the torque for the valve cover?
5-6 ft/lbs
Torque the valve cover bolts to 5-6 ft/lbs, making sure gaskets do not slip out of position. Proper torqueing will help to ensure that your covers do not leak oil.
What happens if you over torque valve cover?
Normally when a bolt is over tightened (before snapping off) the diameter will shrink a little and the thread pitch will be modified. This reduces the strength of the bolt.
Can you over tighten a valve cover gasket?
You can’t over tighten the valve cover cap nuts to “squish” the gasket. Well you can, but you’ll break the studs off. The cap nuts will bottom out at the appropriate torque and distance to the head.
How tight should a valve cover be?
Tighten until your hand can’t tighten anymore (which SHOULDN’T be too tight) And that should be just tight enough. Any tighter and you risk busting a bolt. I learned the hard way and have been doing it this way ever since. 75 in-lbs, according to the FSM.
Should you torque valve cover bolts?
The torque value is required if you don’t want the bolts to back out. Additionally, you want to compress the valve cover gasket. Simple hand tight contact is not going to seal the mating surfaces against the gasket with enough force.
Can you over tighten transmission pan bolts?
Over tightening the bolts can easily damage the pan of a transmission. The flange of the transmission pan should be flat and have no bulges. Over tightening the pan bolts causes the flange to distort. Inspect the pan and make sure the flange is flat.
Can you over tighten gasket?
Continued tightening of the bolts will not necessarily increase gasket load or stop a leak, and if severe enough, the overloading may even lead to bolt failure. The over-tightened bolts then exert a force in excess of the recommended load for the gasket, causing the gasket to be crushed on the flange face.
Can you change the valve cover gaskets?
Replacing a valve cover gasket is fairly basic but the procedure varies by engine. The toughest part is usually getting to the valve cover itself. Step 1: The first step may be the last step. Before tearing everything apart, first try gently cinching down the valve cover bolts or use a torque wrench.
How tight should valve cover bolts be?
Tighten bolts/studs evenly working back and forth, assuring even pressure distribution on cover. Tighten until bolts/studs bottom out on head. Fully tighten, 8Nm (6 ft-lb) (10mm socket 3/8” / 3/8” torque wrench & extension).
